Detailed features
The APORIA® Standard cushion is balanced dynamic seating with independent supports and continuous support: the sit bones and thighs are supported, with no central cut-out or channel; only a 3 cm median rear notch separates the rear supports. Same ExoBase™ as the other versions: a curved base allowing general 360° rocking; four independent supports mounted on the base, each on an elastomer ball joint with its own mobility and limited travel.
This version may be considered when no area needs to be kept out of contact and the aim is to spread the load, including when the sit bones are clearly painful; it is not suitable when a central or rear area needs to be kept out of contact.
Despite its historical French product name (“coussin lombaire”), the Aporia Standard is a dynamic seat cushion with continuous support, not a lumbar support placed behind the back.

When it may help and points to watch
Situations in which this version may be relevant
- Clearly painful sit bones, when the main need is to spread the load over a continuous surface and no other area needs to be kept out of contact.
- Low back pain or back pain made worse by prolonged, fixed sitting, at the office, in the car or at home.
- Stiffness, tension or postural compensations kept going by immobility: the seat accompanies the body’s small adjustments.
- No area needs to be kept out of contact, or a cut-out is less well tolerated than continuous support.
Points to watch
- Pressure in the center or at the back that triggers symptoms, without sit bone pain: check whether this area needs to be kept out of contact (central cut-out: Périnée; rear cut-out: Coccyx) or whether continuous support is still better tolerated; pain in the center or at the back does not, on its own, require a cut-out.
- Sit bone pain together with an area that needs to be kept out of contact (perineum or tailbone): continuous support alone is not enough to rule out a necessary cut-out; the selection guide helps you find the version that keeps this area out of contact while keeping the most continuous support around the sit bones.
- Hypersensitivity of certain contact areas that the firmness and the wedges are not enough to resolve.
- Small movements that bring back the pain at first: increase sitting times cautiously and adjust the settings during the trial.
These guidelines are not medical contraindications. A diagnosis alone is not enough to choose a version: what matters is the area that does not tolerate pressure and the way sitting affects your symptoms. If in doubt, ask your doctor for advice.
What the seat does
- Continuous support: no cut-out area under the sit bones, which remain supported.
- Independent supports, balance, micro-movements: as for the whole range (see the Périnée page). You initiate the movement; the seat accompanies it.
- Back pain and prolonged sitting: France’s national health insurance (Assurance Maladie) points out that movement is part of managing low back pain. The seat is designed to let the pelvis move without losing balance; it does not treat any condition.
What has been evaluated
Pelvi-Seat (user preference, see the Périnée page); kept after the trial (85% at 30 days); patent FR 3 140 745 B1 and EP/US applications. Aporia® is not a medical device.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between continuous support and a central cut-out? A central cut-out removes support in the center, under the perineum, and shifts the load onto the buttocks and thighs. Continuous support carries the sit bones and thighs with no area removed, apart from a 3 cm median rear notch. The choice depends on the area that does not tolerate pressure, not on the diagnosis alone.
Who is the Standard better suited to than the Périnée? When continuous support is the main need and the perineum does not need to be kept out of contact. Clearly painful sit bones are a good reason to look for this continuity, but they are not enough to rule out a necessary perineal cut-out. If pressure in the center triggers symptoms, the Périnée version may be a better match.
Is the cushion suitable for back pain? Aporia is not a treatment for back pain. The seat is designed to avoid a fixed sitting position: it accompanies the body’s small adjustments and limits the effort of holding yourself up. If your back pain increases with prolonged sitting, it can be part of how you set up your workstation; persistent pain calls for medical advice.
Can I use it in the car? Yes, at the office, in the car or at home. The cushion is 12 cm high unloaded; the actual added height depends on how it is placed and how much it compresses under load. Before driving, check that it stays stable and does not interfere with driving, as well as the headroom, the distance to the pedals and your visibility.
Can I try it before buying? Yes. You have a 30-day trial. Returns are free from anywhere in the European Union, and you choose between an exchange (version and/or firmness) and a full refund. For an exchange, shipping of the new product is at your expense and the product you receive gets a new 15-day trial. 85% of cushions are kept at the end of the 30-day trial.
Customer reviews
Review translated from French.
- “I was injured in a motorcycle accident in ’97 […] Since I started using the Aporia cushion, I finally enjoy sitting again and I can get back to a normal social life.” – Sandrine
A word from the founder and president
“I have lived with chronic degenerative disc disease for more than twenty years. While developing Aporia, I also suffered from chronic tailbone pain. So I tested every prototype on myself, for hours on end: that is what taught me that a seat should not just remove a contact point, but let the pelvis move without losing balance. Today, I can literally dance on the seat.” — Gil Ayache, founder and president of Blue Portance
