Understanding Aporia™ technology
Aporia® is a bioactive seating technology developed by Blue Portance.
Unlike conventional ergonomic seating, which tries to hold the body in a predefined posture,
Aporia® is based on a fundamentally different principle:
supporting the body’s capacity to adapt its posture when sitting.
Its multi-articulated design lets the pelvis and spine
continuously self-regulate through controlled micro-movementsMicro-movementsSmall-amplitude movements that can take part in continuous postural adjustments and vary support and stress without a complete change of position.Read the full entry : Micro-movements.
The aim is not to correct or impose a posture, but to
re-engage the body’s natural mechanisms of balance, mobility and stabilization
when sitting.
Aporia® is therefore not a passive comfort cushion but a
dynamic balance system for sitting,
designed to support everyday use over the long term.

How Aporia® works
Most so-called ergonomic cushions share a common principle: imposing or maintaining a supposedly ideal posture (upright, arched, centered).
Aporia® is based on the opposite principle: the body does not adapt to the seat; the seat adapts to the body.
Its multi-articulated design allows continuous micro-adjustments and active stability in several positions, rather than a single fixed posture.
Aporia® is therefore not a positioning cushion but a dynamic balance system for sitting, designed to preserve the body’s postural adaptabilityPostural adaptabilityIn the SBNFA™ framework, postural adaptability refers to a person's functional capacity to continuously adjust their body organization (maintaining it, modifying it, redistributing their points of support) according to the task, the environment, the available support and their functional state at the moment.Read the full entry : Postural adaptability.
Learn more: Balanced dynamic seating with independent supports
In conventional sitting, the body is placed in a
biomechanically demanding configuration.
The pelvis loses its natural mobility, the spine is held
in a single orientation, and the soft tissues
(muscles, fasciaFasciaFascia are connective tissue structures that envelop, connect or separate certain parts of the body. The "fascial system" refers to a broader set of connective tissues considered in their functional continuity.Read the full entry : Fascia, nerves) are subjected to prolonged compression.
To adapt, the body sets up compensation mechanisms:
persistent muscle tension, avoidance postures or protective stillness.
These strategies help in the short term but can, over time,
become a source of persistent pain, especially with prolonged sitting.

Why conventional sitting becomes harmful
No.
Aporia™ is a bioactive seating technology designed to improve sitting conditions and support dynamic postural regulation.
It does not replace medical care and is not a treatment in the regulatory sense.
Situations, profiles and uses of Aporia™
Aporia® is designed for situations where sitting becomes uncomfortable, painful or demanding, especially when stillness or an imposed posture makes symptoms worse.
Aporia® may be useful in particular:
- With pain related to prolonged sitting: office work, remote work, studying, long drives, frequent travel.
- With back or postural pain: low back painLow back painLow back pain is pain in the lower back, located between the thoracolumbar junction and the gluteal fold. In the vast majority of cases it is described as common (non-specific): it is mechanical in origin and does not stem from a serious disease.Read the full entry : Low back pain, diffuse back pain, disc problems, herniated discs, pain related to musculoskeletal disorders.
- When perineal or pelvic pain increases when sitting: pudendal neuralgiaPudendal neuralgiaNeuropathic pain in the territory of the pudendal nerve (perineum, external genitalia, anal region), often made worse by sitting.Read the full entry : Pudendal neuralgia, pelvic and perineal pain, endometriosisEndometriosisEndometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity. It can cause severe pelvic pain and infertility.Read the full entry : Endometriosis, after pelvic surgery, postpartum.
- With pain in the tailbone or sacral area: coccydyniaCoccydyniaPain located in the tailbone (coccyx) region, often worse when sitting.Read the full entry : Coccydynia, anal pain or pain in the cleft between the buttocks, hemorrhoids, pilonidal cyst, sacral pressure sores (prevention).
- With chronic or diffuse pain: fibromyalgiaFibromyalgiaFibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome combining persistent widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances and often difficulty concentrating, with no tissue damage that could on its own explain the intensity of the symptoms.Read the full entry : Fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, sensitivity to pressure when sitting.
- Preventively, when the aim is to limit pain related to a sedentary lifestyle and preserve the natural mobility of the pelvis and spine.
Aporia® does not aim to treat a specific condition, but to restore favorable biomechanical conditions where conventional sitting becomes harmful.
To find the Aporia® version best suited to your situation (Standard, Périnée, Coccyx or Canyon), see our dedicated guide:
Aporia™ may be suitable when perineal or pelvic pain is made worse by sitting, provided you choose the appropriate version and follow the instructions for use.
In these situations, the Aporia™ Périnée version, with its central cut-out, helps reduce direct contact while keeping the mobility and stability of the Aporia™ seat.
The aim is not to isolate the painful area, but to provide a seat that is compatible with pelvic physiology. Getting used to it should be gradual and individual.
Yes, Aporia™ may be suitable when tailbone or sacral pain is made worse by sitting, provided you choose the appropriate version and follow the instructions for use.
In these situations, the Aporia™ Coccyx version, with its rear cut-out, helps avoid direct contact with the painful area while keeping the mobility and stability of the Aporia™ seat.
The aim is not to fix the posture, but to preserve pelvic mobilityPelvic mobilityPelvic mobility is the pelvis's ability to change orientation relative to the spine and the femurs: forward or backward (anterior and posterior pelvic tilt), sideways (lateral tilt) and in rotation.Read the full entry : Pelvic mobility while limiting the mechanical loadMechanical loadMechanical load refers to all the forces applied to the body or to a tissue. It is described by several variables: magnitude, direction, area of application, duration, frequency, loading rate and recovery between exposures.Read the full entry : Mechanical load on the tailbone area. Getting used to it should be gradual and individual.
Aporia™ may be suitable when chronic or diffuse pain is made worse by sitting, especially when stillness or an imposed posture becomes a source of discomfort.
In these situations, Aporia™ helps keep continuous postural mobility and limit prolonged pressure, which is often poorly tolerated with persistent pain or hypersensitivity.
Aporia™ may therefore be considered in situations such as myofascial pain, fibromyalgia or when static pressure is hard to bear. Getting used to it should be gradual and respect individual sensations.
Aporia™ is not approved automotive equipment and is not designed to be attached to a vehicle seat. It never replaces a car seat or a restraint system.
That said, many users occasionally use Aporia™ in the car and report noticeably better comfort when sitting, especially on longer journeys.
This use is the user’s responsibility; check beforehand that the following conditions are met:
- the cushion is sufficiently stable on the seat,
- it does not interfere with the vehicle controls,
- it is compatible with your body shape and the geometry of the driving position (seat–pedals–steering wheel distance).
In practice, we recommend trying it on short journeys first, paying attention to your sense of balance, and stopping immediately if it feels unstable.
Use, settings and getting used to it
Aporia® must be placed on a stable, rigid seat.
It works through controlled mobility and
dynamic postural regulation around your natural balance.
For the technology to work fully, please follow these points:
1. Leave the cushion completely free to move
- Avoid surfaces that are too soft.
- Leave a gap of about 4 finger widths between the back of the cushion and the backrest.
- Do not wedge the cushion between armrests that are too narrow.
2. Set up the best conditions for dynamic balance
- Feet firmly on the floor (essential): the hips and ankles are the coordinated keys to human balance.
- Sit symmetrically on the seat
(the curve of your buttocks extends about 2 finger widths beyond the back of the cushion). - Adjust the tilt of the seat to your natural profile using the wedges.
Note: getting used to it is gradual. The body rediscovers a mobility that has often been dormant.
Everyone has their own postural balancePostural balancePostural balance is the ability to keep or restore the projection of the center of mass within the base of support, both at rest and in motion. When sitting, it involves the trunk, the pelvis and the hips.Read the full entry : Postural balance,
determined by the natural tilt of the pelvis, acquired during development
and not pathological.
There are three main profiles:
-
Arched profile (hyperlordosis) – about 40%
Sacrum tilted up, pronounced lower-back curve, rounded buttocks. -
Flat-back profile (hypolordosis) – about 40%
Sacrum more vertical, reduced lower-back curve, flatter buttocks. -
Neutral profile (median) – about 20%
Sacrum tilted between 10 and 20°, centered pelvis, balanced curve.
In practice: how do I recognize my profile?
Method 1 – Body awareness (simple)
- Stand with your feet flat on the floor, without deliberately straightening up.
- Gently tilt your pelvis forward, then backward.
- Stop in the most stable position, without tension.
- Pelvis forward → arched profile
- Pelvis centered → neutral profile
- Pelvis backward → flat-back profile
Method 2 – Orientation of the sacrum
Standing, place your hand on your sacrum and observe its angle to the vertical:
- 0–10° → flat back
- 10–20° → neutral
- > 20° → arched
In conventional sitting, everyone is given the same horizontal tilt, which cancels out the natural balance of the pelvis.
The adjustable wedge restores this balance when sitting by adapting the tilt of the seat to your build.
Where do I place the wedge?
Under the curved base of the cushion, there are two positions with hook-and-loop strips:
- Arched profile: wedge at the back
- Flat-back profile: wedge at the front
- Neutral profile: no wedge
Small or large wedge?
The wedges come in two sizes to match the natural range of the sacrum:
-
Flat back
- 0 to 5°: large wedge
- 5 to 10°: small wedge
-
Arched back
- 20 to 30°: small wedge
- Over 30°: large wedge
The user guide comes with the product and is also available for download.
It explains how to set up, adjust and gradually get used to Aporia™.
