Detailed features
The APORIA® Coccyx cushion is balanced dynamic seating with independent supports and a rear cut-out. Same ExoBase™: a curved base allowing general 360° rocking; four independent supports mounted on the base, each on an elastomer ball joint with its own mobility and limited travel.
This version may be considered when pressure behind the anus and under the tailbone triggers the pain, the perineum can remain supported, and the other contact points tolerate the load; if the sit bones are clearly painful, check that the rear cut-out does not increase the load on them.

When it may help and points to watch
Situations in which this version may be relevant
- Coccydynia or sacrococcygeal pain made worse by direct pressure at the back.
- Pain that began after a fall or an injury to the tailbone, when pressure at the back triggers it.
- Hypersensitivity of the tailbone area to contact with the seat.
- A need to relieve the tailbone without locking the pelvis in place: the independent supports accompany small adjustments.
Points to watch
- Clearly painful sit bones: check that the rear cut-out does not concentrate the load on painful sit bones. If the tailbone does not need to be relieved, Standard provides more continuous support.
- Pain that extends toward the center (perineum): a rear cut-out does not relieve the perineum. The extent of the area that does not tolerate pressure points toward a central cut-out (Périnée) or a continuous center channel (Aporia Canyon); the selection guide helps you check.
- Shifted load poorly tolerated under the buttocks or the sit bones.
- Pain that does not change when pressure at the back is removed: a cut-out may not be the right lever; talk to your doctor about it.
- Small movements that bring back the pain at first: short periods, and adjust the firmness and the wedges during the trial.
These guidelines are not medical contraindications. A diagnosis alone is not enough to choose a version: what matters is the area that does not tolerate pressure and the way sitting affects your symptoms. If in doubt, ask your doctor for advice.
Why a rear cut-out?
In some cases of common coccydynia, the pain is linked to instability of the tailbone under the load of sitting: dislocation or hypermobility, visible on X-rays taken sitting but not lying down. Dr. Jean-Yves Maigne, a pioneer of the modern approach to coccydynia, demonstrated this mechanism (Maigne, Guedj & Straus, Spine, 1994). It is not the only possible cause. When direct pressure under the tailbone triggers the pain, removing that pressure limits the load placed on it when sitting.
What the seat does
- Rear cut-out: it removes seat contact behind the anus and under the tailbone, while the perineum, the sit bones and the sides remain supported.
- Independent supports, balance, micro-movements: as for the whole range. You initiate the movement; the seat accompanies it.
What has been evaluated
Kept after the trial (85% at 30 days); patent FR 3 140 745 B1 and EP/US applications; Aporia was presented on the Blue Portance stand at the 4th International Coccydynia Symposium (Paris Coccyx 2023, Paris, July 6–7, 2023). Aporia® is not a medical device.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a rear cut-out and a central cut-out? The rear cut-out removes support under the tailbone: 6 cm between the rear supports, narrowing to 3 cm toward the center. The central cut-out of the Périnée version removes support in the center, under the perineum. They do not clear the same area: a rear cut-out does not relieve the perineum.
Is the Coccyx cushion suitable if my perineum also hurts? Not necessarily: a rear cut-out does not relieve the perineum. If the pain extends to the center, the extent of the area that does not tolerate pressure points toward a central cut-out (Périnée) or a continuous center channel (Aporia Canyon). If the sit bones are also painful, look for the version that keeps the necessary area out of contact while keeping the most continuous support around them.
Is the cushion suitable after a fall on the tailbone? Significant or persistent pain after a fall, or pain with unusual signs, calls for medical advice. After that, if direct pressure under the tailbone triggers the pain when sitting, a rear cut-out limits the load on that area. Aporia does not replace medical advice.
Can I try it before buying? Yes. You have a 30-day trial. Returns are free from anywhere in the European Union, and you choose between an exchange (version and/or firmness) and a full refund. For an exchange, shipping of the new product is at your expense and the product you receive gets a new 15-day trial. 85% of cushions are kept at the end of the 30-day trial.

A word from the founder and president
“I have lived with chronic degenerative disc disease for more than twenty years. While developing Aporia, I also suffered from chronic tailbone pain. So I tested every prototype on myself, for hours on end: that is what taught me that a seat should not just remove a contact point, but let the pelvis move without losing balance. Today, I can literally dance on the seat.” — Gil Ayache, founder and president of Blue Portance
