Sacral nutation and counternutation

Nutation and counternutation are very small-amplitude movements of the sacrum relative to the iliac bones. In nutation, the sacral base tilts forward and downward; counternutation is the reverse movement.

Sacral slope

Sacral slope is the angle between the sacral plate (the upper surface of the first sacral vertebra) and the horizontal. It increases when the pelvis tilts forward (anterior pelvic tilt) and decreases when it tilts backward (posterior pelvic tilt): it is a positional parameter.

Sacroiliac joint

The sacroiliac joint connects the sacrum to the iliac bone on each side of the pelvis. A true joint, very stable and with a very small range of motion, it transmits and distributes loads between the trunk and the lower limbs.

Sacrospinous ligament

The sacrospinous ligament connects the sacrum and coccyx to the ischial spine and contributes to the mechanical organization of the posterior pelvis.

Sacrotuberous ligament

The sacrotuberous ligament is a broad ligament connecting the sacrum to the ischial tuberosity and contributing to the posterior mechanical organization of the pelvis.

Clinical term

Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, from the buttock down the back or side of the leg, sometimes as far as the foot. It is most often related to irritation of a lower lumbar nerve root (L5 or S1), frequently from a herniated disc.

Spinal profile

The spinal profile refers to the shape of the spine seen from the side, that is, the organization of its curves in relation to the orientation of the pelvis. It varies naturally from one person to another.
